Job Description: The Deputy Director works closely with the Executive Director and a 20-member volunteer Board of Directors to set long-term goals and objectives of the Howard County Arts Council, develop program budgets, and implement initiatives. The Deputy reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for planning, implementing and marketing all programs, tracking and maintaining budgets, hiring and supervising six program and building staff and 25 independent contractors, researching and writing grants, evaluating programs, and managing daily building operations, safety and maintenance; and other duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate should have a B.A., M.A. preferred, and 3+ years of direct experience in arts program development and implementation and/or non-profit administration/management in a supervisory role. Significant experience with increased responsibilities similar to those indicated herein and proven commitment to non-profit work, particularly in the arts, are needed. Demonstrated ability to maintain positive working relationships with a wide variety of constituents and handle multiple, concurrent and high priority tasks are essential.
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position; occasional evening and week-end hours are required. Salary mid - high 30’s, based on experience. Job Requirements: Other qualifications needed: strong computer, communication, audience development and organizational skills; commitment to the arts; understanding of public arts policy; experience in running art classes or programs; excellent writing, proof reading, record keeping; and ability to handle multiple projects at once in a demanding, fast-paced office environment while maintaining composure and confidence. Must be able to use a personal computer, type 55 WPM, and have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office or similar applications. Must have own transportation; be able to operate an automobile, computers and related office equipment; lift up to 50 pounds; remain seated for long periods of time; and bend, stoop, reach, and climb without difficulty. Marketing experience is a plus.
