PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCES - DURING CAREER

The industrial training program of Semester II of Level 03, was performed in Mobitel (Pvt) Ltd., one of the dominant mobile operators in Sri Lanka, for a period of six months. This placement gave me a chance of exposing me into the mobile communication industry and studying the third generation technologies of the same. The projects done during this training program are as follows:

• Programming project: Implementing Mobile Banking using Java. This system enables the mobile subscribers to perform banking by sending SMS. Apart from the programming experience I gathered, this project gave me a chance of studying the SMPP (Short Message Peer to Peer) protocol, TCP/IP, functionalities of SMSC (Short Message Service Center) and UML. This project also enabled me to participate the meetings with clients (for requirement analysis, evaluation, etc.) and present my designs to IT Engineers of Mobitel and the final system to the system Engineers in bank.

• Planning projects: Coverage Prediction using CellPlanner of Ericsson and Path Calculations using LinkPlanner of Ericsson to assist the Radio Network Planning Division.

 Operation & Maintenance (OMC) project: Survey on Alarm Monitoring Systems. In this, I could familiarize different types of methods used to monitor the alarms of Base Stations, Mobile Switching Center and Value Added Services Platform and study the software WinFOIL that is used for above monitoring.

 Switching project: Studied the Switching system & modules and created a database for the inventory control of switch modules. This database system can alarm the Engineers of Switching in case of lacking spares, expiry of repair dates and so forth.

 Transmission projects: Got involved in the implementation (terminal devices such as MMU, TRU, AMM, etc.), configuration of base stations (BTS) using the software ‘MiniLink Service Manager (MSM)’ and alignment of antennas.

Final Year Project
An ‘Automatic Wireless Weather Monitoring System’ was developed as the final year project carries ten credits. This system can be installed in any place of the country and used to gather weather parameters such as temperature, rain fall, relative humidity, wind speed, wind direction and atmospheric pressure, in a data collection frequency opted by the user (using Programming IC as the controller). The GPRS technology is used to send the gathered data to a central server, which is also capable of requesting/commanding the remote station and performing data analysis and visualization.

Independent Study (of Level 04 – Semester II)
This program was done at the Biomedical Division of the Apollo Hospitals, Colombo, where the medical equipments with their functions (technical) were studied, and a report was submitted to the University.
